In my new video series, Words After Dark, I’ll be reading my writing—pieces from my memoir and excerpts out of From the Dust—and chapters from some of my favorite authors.
In this video, I read an excerpt out of From the Dust. This reading is from the first piece in the collection titled, The Scent of Books. It tells the story of my growing up, through Mom's string of prison sentences and Dad's days in the meth lab, and how I escaped the desert to find a home in Perry. Jumping back and forth in time through poetic prose, this is only a preview of what's to come in my full-length memoir.
