words after dark: flames and the tin foil

In my new video series, Words After Dark, I’ll be reading my writing—pieces from my memoir and excerpts out of From the Dust—and works from some of my favorite authors.

In this video, I read an excerpt out of From the Dust. This reading is from the third piece in the collection titled, Flames and the Tin Foil. There’s much more to this story, but this excerpt is taken from somewhere in the middle, when Mom was running from the cops for stealing a fur coat and a laundry basket full of jewelry. Does she get away? You’ll have to read the full story to find out. But I’ll say this, like many of my stories, it’s about hope.

Watch the video until the end for a little clip of Mom telling a piece of this story. When you order the book you can hear the more expanded clip in the cassette tape, alongside music by Perry Rhodes.

Thank you to those who have purchased the book. You can order it here if you haven’t already.
